4 Xinjiang hijackers get death, life imprisonment
A court in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region today sentenced three men to death and the fourth to life imprisonment after finding them guilty of attempting to hijack a plane with 100 passengers in June, Xinhua News Agency reported.
They are among the six men arrested for trying to hijack Tianjin Airlines' Flight GS7554 just 10 minutes after it took off from the Hotan Airport on June 29 for the regional capital Urumqi, about 1,400 km away.
Aircrew and passengers leapt into action and succeed to foil their hijack attempt. The plane flew back and safely landed at the Hotan Airport.
Two policemen on the flight were seriously injured, and the head attendant and seven passengers had minor injuries, Xinhua said.
"The hijackers claimed to have a bomb and tried to enter the cockpit but failed to open the door," a Beijing resident whose husband was on the flight, told Shanghai Daily.
The woman, who declined to be named, said one of the hijackers took out a ball-shaped device and tried to ignite it. Two in-flight guards and several passengers, including two policemen, jumped from their seats to tackle the hijackers, she said.
China's aviation authorities later rewarded the crew members and passengers and called for constant vigilance against terrorists.
