4 dead, 1 missing after NW China rainstorms

FOUR people are dead and one remains missing due to rainstorms that have battered northwest China's Shaanxi Province since early September, local government authorities said today.

As of today, rain had affected a total of 658,000 people in 65 counties in ten of the province's cities, according to the Civil Affairs Department of Shaanxi.

Rainstorms have also damaged about 15,000 housing units and affected 37,800 hectares of farmland in the province, with direct economic losses of 600 million yuan (US$97.8 million).

Local governments have relocated about 162,000 residents to safer regions to avoid geological risks.

The Shaanxi provincial government has initiated an emergency disaster relief response for natural disasters.

The provincial civil affairs department has allocated 10 million yuan to fund disaster relief, in addition to sending tents, cotton sheets and food to aid the relief efforts.

Rainfall and severe downpours will continue to hit Shaanxi until Tuesday, said the provincial meteorological station.

The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs have sent work teams to the areas.
