4 detained in China over NZ drugs case

CHINESE police, in cooperation with their New Zealand counterparts, have detained four men in connection with smuggling ephedrine, customs sources said yesterday.

Ephedrine is a key ingredient in the manufacture of methamphetamine, Xiamen customs in southeast China’s Fujian Province said, and the amount involved in the case was the largest seized to date.

Last April, 199.54 kilograms of ephedrine, with a street value of US$102.07 million, was discovered by New Zealand customs hidden in boxes of paper sent from Xiamen.

Chinese police launched their investigation after they received a report from New Zealand, the customs said.

On July 12, three suspects were seized — in Fujian’s Fuzhou, Shangrao in east China’s Jiangxi Province, and Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Another suspect was captured in Shangrao the following month.

Officers from Xiamen customs’ anti-smuggling department were sent to Auckland to gather evidence for its investigation in December last year, the customs said.

New Zealand police arrested three people in connection with the case in May last year.
