4 detained in underage sex investigation
FOUR people have been detained in Xining, northwest China’s Qinghai Province, on suspicion of coercing underage girls into working as prostitutes.
The gang is alleged to have lured 10 girls aged between 12 and 17 from their hometown of Yichun, east China’s Jiangxi Province, with the offer of jobs in Xining, the Xihai Metropolitan Daily reported yesterday.
A fifth suspect is being sought by the authorities, the report said.
Police launched an investigation last month, after a man from Yichun reported that he had lost contact with his 14-year-old daughter who left home in March to go and work at a restaurant in Xining.
In the course of their enquiries, police discovered that several other girls had gone missing, the report said.
The investigation concluded recently when police raided a property in Xining, believed to have been the gang’s headquarters.
Four people were detained in the operation after several young girls were found inside the property, the report said.
The raid also yielded various documents allegedly linking them to a prostitution racket, it said.
