4 detained over workmate’s fatal beating

POLICE in south China’s Guangdong Province have detained four people in relation to the beating to death of a construction worker earlier this month.

Zhao Zhiming was killed when he and 20 fellow migrant workers were set upon by dozens of armed men on March 6. All of the people involved were employed by the No. 15 Bureau of the China Railway Construction Corp, the construction contractor for the Guangzhou-Lechang Expressway project, police in Yingde City said yesterday.

As well as the four men detained, a police notice has been posted on the Internet for three other people wanted in connection with the attack.

Police said the migrant workers had been employed on the expressway project since September 2013, but were dismissed last month after the Spring Festival. A dispute then broke out over unpaid wages.

The fatal attack happened after the men had made a second failed appeal for their wages.

As they walked along a street close to the construction project office they were attacked by a large group of men armed with knives and iron bars.

Zhao Xinbiao, the uncle of the dead man, said his nephew was owed 8,000 yuan (US$1,284) in back pay. As a group, the migrant workers were owed more than 140,000 yuan, he said.

Police said the instigator of the attack was Li Yukun, the material contractor for the construction project.

Union official Zhao Yongqi said although China Railway Construction wasn’t “directly liable” for Zhao Zhiming’s death, it would pay compensation of 180,000 yuan to his family.
