4 die in bridge collapse
FOUR people died when heavy overnight rain toppled a bridge that formed part of a national expressway in the city of Fuxin, in northeast China's Liaoning Province, local officials said yesterday.
The accident happened at around 2am.
Built in 1969, the bridge forms part of the No. 101 national expressway linking Beijing with Shenyang, the provincial capital.
Another three bridges on the route are in danger of collapse after downpours eroded foundations. The expressway section has been closed.
By Monday morning, local authorities had evacuated 500 residents from low-lying communities.
Meanwhile, a storm accompanied by gales in Laohekou, in central Hubei Province, tore down more than 50 residential rooms on Monday, injuring 12 people.
