4 embezzlers of quake donations sentenced to jail
A COURT in eastern Zhejiang Province upheld its 16-year sentence against four township officials for embezzling 620,000 yuan (US$93,317) of public donations for areas hit by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
Sun Shuirong, a cadre in charge of donations in Zhili Township, Huzhou City, was sentenced to 16 years in jail for pocketing 200,000 yuan of the relief fund and taking other bribes. Chen Guorong, Wei Zhugen and Shen Meiying received jail terms from 12 1/2 years to 16 years for splitting the rest of the money, said the Huzhou City Intermediate People's Court yesterday.
A fund-raising campaign was launched three days after the May 12 earthquake. It remains unknown how much money had been collected because no book record could be traced.
The embezzlement was discovered after a house cleaner accidentally found a bundle of cash totaling 85,174 yuan under Sun's sofa last September. She reported to local anti-corruption agency which later confirmed the money was part of the relief funds.
The four stole the money after the fund-raising campaign. Sun and Wei got 200,000 yuan each while Chen and Shen took 110,000 yuan each. The four were also accused of taking bribes worth nearly 100,000 yuan.
The court rejected the four men's appeal and claim that they were tortured for confession in custody.
