4 family members detained after finding bankcard, stealing 16,700 yuan
FOUR family members have been detained for emptying a bank account of 16,700 yuan (US$2,729) after they found a lost bankcard in Zengcheng city in south China’s Guangdong Province, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.
Police recovered 16,000 yuan from a drawer in the family home. They had used 700 yuan for a meal and some personal accessories for family members, according to a suspect surnamed Li, who added that they felt uneasy with such a large sum of money.
Another family member involved in the case is under house arrest.
A surveillance photo posted on the newspaper’s website shows the four suspects standing in front of the ATM machine where they cleaned out the account.
They found the bankcard inside a personal address book on February 6. They wanted to try their luck at an ATM machine with a six-figure number they discovered in the address book.
Since the number turned out to be the account’s PIN, they took all the money, the report said.
The account owner, surnamed Xiong, reported the loss to police, saying his bankcard was left in an address book he had lost. Xiong, who is about 60, said he wrote the PIN in the book because his memory isn’t good.
He had collected the 16,700 yuan in savings from his salary during two years in which he had led a thrifty life.
Police nabbed the four suspects on February 18 at their apartment. They admitted stealing money with the card at an ATM machine, police said.
A lawyer said the fraud case is different from just finding the cash on the street and suspects can get up to life imprisonment if the amount stolen is very large.
