4 get prison in human kidney trafficking case

FOUR people have been sentenced to prison for trafficking human kidneys, Jiangnan Daily reported yesterday.
The two ring leaders, Deng Kaijun and Li Shengchang, met in 2009 when both had sold a kidney, according to the Poyang County People's Court in Jiangxi Province.
In April 2012, Deng asked Li to join him in the organ-trafficking business. They found two more partners who paid them 17,000 yuan (US$2,735) as shareholders.
They posted advertisements on major domestic social networks, and provided prospective kidney sellers room and board in Poyang. They visited dialysis wards across the country looking for buyers.
A seller would earn 30,000 to 50,000 yuan for a kidney but the broker could earn as much as 280,000 yuan in commission, the police said.
The court found the group had asked a local man to do medical testing for them, but they did not say whether the group completed any sales.
They were found to have paid 10 people for one of their kidneys each and keeping them in a house to await transplant surgery.
Police raided their residence in July and rescued the 10 young victims, aged 18 and 27, including two students from well-known universities.
Deng got four years in prison, Li and another man got two years, and a fourth man got six months.
