4 held over deadly bus crash

FOUR people have been detained in connection with a bus crash on Friday in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, in which 35 people were killed.

The bus was carrying 46 passengers when it fell into a ravine about 30 meters deep near a forest park in Chunhua County.

Twenty-five people were pronounced dead at the scene, while 10 others died later in hospital. The remaining 11 people are being treated for various injuries.

Many of the people on the bus were senior citizens on a sightseeing and shopping tour organized by Xiangban Trading Co, which leased four buses for the 193-member group. They were on their way home when the accident happened.

The four people detained are the bus driver, surnamed Wang, the vehicle’s owner, surnamed Liang, and the legal representative of Xiangban and the tour’s organizer, both of whom are surnamed Zhang.

Huang Ming, vice public security minister, is in Chunhua to oversee an investigation.

Fatal road accidents are a serious problem in China, where traffic regulations are often flouted.

In August last year, 44 people were killed and 11 were injured when a tour bus fell into a valley following a three-vehicle pile-up. A month earlier, 43 people were killed in a fiery explosion after a van loaded with alcohol rear-ended a coach in central China’s Hunan Province.
