4 injured as jet crashes into house

A CHINESE military aircraft crashed yesterday morning in downtown Shantou, a city in southern Guangdong Province, setting a house on fire and injuring four people, authorities said.

The pilot parachuted to safety but the aircraft came down on a house in the city's Jinping District, setting off a large explosion at about 9am.

Four people were trapped in the house. One managed to flee and three others were rescued, and all were sent to a local hospital, Shantou officials said.

A 26-year-old woman was seriously injured and the others had slight injuries from the fire, though no details were available yesterday.

The fire took two hours to put out.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed the crashed aircraft was a J-7 jet fighter, an advanced, Chinese-made version of the Russian MiG-21 fighter.

In 2004, a J-7 malfunctioned in a thunderstorm and came down near Wuhan in central Hubei Province, killing a person on the ground. In 2010, the crash of a J-7 claimed the life of its pilot in Jinan in east China's Shandong Province.
