4 injured on Guangzhou subway in stampede triggered by pepper spray
A STAMPEDE led to injuries this morning on a Metro train in Guangzhou, provincial capital of Guangdong Province, after two men sprayed an irritating gas that turned out to be pepper spray on those on board, the local Nanfang Daily quoted witnesses as saying.
Four passengers sustained scrapes trying to get away.
The train was leaving the Guangzhou Railway Station when the incident took place. A witness said a pair of men attacked the crowd with the spray on a rear carriage of a train on Metro Line 5, triggering a stampede as passengers rushed to escape.
Police found a bottle at the scene. An initial investigation showed that it was pepper spray, used by women at times for self-defense, made by a producer in Zhejiang Province.
The incident caused about 10 minutes of delay. The Metro Line 5 has resumed normal operations.
