4 jailed for fighting at HK airport
FOUR people from China’s mainland have been jailed in Hong Kong following a violent dispute at the city’s airport.
The incident happened about 2:30am on Tuesday, when a group of six mainlanders clashed with airport staff over a flight delay. The six were booked on a flight from Hong Kong to Beijing, which was held up for more than six hours due to bad weather.
Disgruntled by the delay, one of the six attempted to force his way onto the air bridge. When he was tackled by staff members a scuffle broke out in which some of the workers were injured. Police arrived and the six passengers, aged 21 to 42, were arrested.
At the Tsuen Wan Magistracy on Wednesday, four people were given custodial sentences of between nine and 11 days after being found guilty on nine counts, including common assault, The Beijing News reported yesterday, without naming the defendants.
A fifth member of the group, 21-year-old Li Haoxuan, escaped a prison term, but was fined HK$1,500 (US$195) for his part in the fracas, while a sixth person, 39-year-old Zhao Li, pleaded not guilty and was released on HK$100,000 bail. Her case will be heard in September.
Despite the guilty charges, several other of the 229 passengers booked on the delayed flight complained of poor service by the carrier, Hong Kong Airlines, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
