4 killed after explosion rumor leads to panic
FOUR people died in a road accident after a rumor that a chemical factory was about to explode led to tens of thousands of residents fleeing their homes in panic in Jiangsu Province on Thursday.
The Xiangshui County government said no explosion occurred and most people returned home by 6am that day, Jinling Evening News reported yesterday.
The source of the rumor was still under investigation,
According to the newspaper, the four victims who died were among more than 20 people fleeing on a flatbed tricycle that fell into a river.
Early on Thursday, a rumor began to spread that there was a poisonous gas leak in the Chenjiagang Industrial Zone and that an explosion could occur at any minute.
Some people told the newspaper that they smelled a pungent odor.
One resident, surnamed Wan, said people started to leave for the county center at about 1am.
"I was wondering what they were running for, and then a relative called and told me a chemical factory in the industrial zone was about to explode," Wan said.
"I didn't believe it at first, but I discovered that all my relatives had already left, so I followed."
Most people who fled returned home at dawn.
Local government said that security inspection and environmental protection staff were investigating the source of the smell.
Officials said no sign of problems had been found.
