4 people assault writer over property dispute

CHINESE avant-garde writer Ma Yuan was beaten up over a property dispute in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province, police said yesterday.

Ma, 59, was beaten unconsciousness by four people, led by Zhou Hailin, on Thursday over the lease of an abandoned school house near Nanru Mountain, police said on their microblog on weibo.com.

Ye Haiping, a primary school headmaster in Gelanghe Hanni Ethinc Township, illegally rented the house to Zhou, but the government reclaimed the public property and lent it to Ma, which angered Zhou, according to the microblog.

Zhou asked Chen Yongbin, Sha Er and Tang Yong to help in the dispute. They broke into Ma's place to force him to move out. Ma refused and they kicked him to the ground, police said.

Police said they have detained the four attackers and Ye has been suspended.
