4 shot dead in police chase of 2 murder suspects

ONE more police officer died of gunshot wounds today after two policemen and a police assistant were shot dead yesterday in Tai'an, a small city in east China's Shandong Province.

Five others, including two civilians, who were injured in the shooting, are now being treated in Tai'an No. 88 Military Hospital, sdnews.com.cn reported today.

One of the two suspects shot himself after they were cornered by police. The other was arrested.

Police seized a double-barreled shotgun, a homemade pistol and 187 bullets.

The shooting occurred when police officers went to the home of a suspect's brother to investigate a murder that happened in Dezhou, also a city in the province, on December 29. The two suspects opened fire behind the bars of a steel safety door after officers revealed their identity.

The suspects fled the apartment, hijacked four vehicles in the flight and shot two drivers. When they were cornered, the two men resisted arrest brandishing knives and threatening to shoot.
