4 students killed in hit-and-run accident
POLICE in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, issued a 100,000-yuan (US$14,500) reward for a suspect wanted for the hit-and-run killing of four junior high school students. One other student was seriously injured.
An orange Dongfeng truck rammed into a group of cycling students from Doumen High School in Xi'an's Chang'an District at 6:05am on Tuesday.
The driver fled the scene.
Three female students, Jia Xiaomei, Wang Fangyuan and Jia Hangli, and one boy, Zhang Sai, died at the scene.
Zhang Tian, 15, was the only survivor. He was sent to hospital and found to have a fractured pelvis.
A task force of more than 200 officers led by Wu Jin掳?biao, director of Xi'an Public Security Bureau, was investigating the crime, Xi'an-based Chinese Business View reported yesterday.
More than 10,000 officers around the capital were also on the lookout for the suspect. The task force has urged the suspect to surrender as soon as possible.
Dongfeng trucks were under strict surveillance in Shaanxi, while officers in Chang'an visited residents house by house.
A member of the task force, who was not willing to disclose his name, told the newspaper the suspect would be seized in a few days if he was still in Xi'an as police have already been given some useful information.
The high school has dispatched teachers to man the intersection close to the school gate to ensure students' safety before and after school.
More than a dozen locals have been killed on that section of the road, despite the speed limit being just 30 kilometers per hour.
Police said the driver may have been drowsy or fallen asleep at the wheel.
