44 pupils ill after Hep B vaccines

NEARLY half of the 84 pupils vaccinated against hepatitis B virus yesterday in a south China primary school complained of dizziness, stomach-ache and vomiting after the jabs.

The local health authority has sealed the remaining vaccines but says it is still unsure whether the sickness was linked to the vaccines, today's Guangzhou Daily reported.

The health authority with Huilai County of Guangdong Province's Jieyang City said more than 90,000 such vaccines have been used with no adverse reaction reported so far.

They said the products are safe in manufacture, storage and transport.

Thirty-nine pupils have recovered after treatment with five still having a swollen throat, Wu Junqiu, dean of Huilai Disease Control and Prevention Center, told Guangzhou Daily.

Experts from the center have checked every sick child, he added.

Huilai Health Bureau said it is investigating to the cause of the reactions to the jabs at Kengzai Primary School in Huilai's Qishi Town.
