45 arraigned for mine accident that killed 44
Forty-five people have been charged in connection with a deadly coal mine blast in Henan Province last month, which left 44 miners dead and four missing, Xinhua reported today.
The gas blast occurred in a coal mine in Yichuan County at 7:20pm on March 31 and caused direct economic losses worth 27.284 million yuan. The Yichuan National Coal Mine Company was shut down by local authorities immediately after the accident.
Ensuing investigation showed that there was serious dereliction of duties and corruption among local officials who allowed the coal mine to operate illegally, Xinhua reported.
The 45 people who were prosecuted include the former Yichuan People's Court President Zhang Guoqing and the mining company's legal representative Wang Guozheng. Another 32 local government officials were given administrative punishment.
