46 sentenced over meat from sick and dead pigs
A TOTAL of 46 people were today jailed or detained in Wenling, in eastern Zhejiang Province, for buying sick and dead pigs and selling the meat to the food industry.
The sub-standard pork ended up in wholesale markets, meat processors and restaurants.
The ringleader, whose identity wasn't disclosed, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, and fined 800,000 yuan (US$128,720) for producing and selling unsafe food, said the Wenling City People's Court.
Online pictures showed one of those convicted smiling in court.
No other details of the verdicts were disclosed, Wenling Daily reported.
Earlier, prosecutors told how Zhang Xingbing, a native in southwest China's Sichuan Province, met Chen Guanghua, who worked in a Wenling meat processing plant, and asked to be introduced to producers with sick and dead stock.
Zhang rented a garbage dump as a makeshift slaughterhouse and recruited farmers as butchers, the court heard.
Between 2010 and April 2012, Zhang profited more than 70,000 yuan for selling 1,000 pigs, Xinhua News Agency cited prosecutors as saying.
The underground business was busted on April 12, 2012. Police held 65 people and seized 10 tons of inferior pork, Xinhua reported.
