5 Chinese universities on world鈥檚 best 100
Five Chinese universities feature in a list of the 100 world鈥檚 most prestigious compiled by Times Higher Education.
They include Tsinghua, which moved to 26th place from 36th last year, and Peking, which rose nine places to 32nd in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2015.
The University of Hong Kong slipped from 43rd into to the 51-60 band, while National Taiwan University dropped to the 61-70 band, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology also slipped a band to 71-80.
鈥淭his is a strong performance by China. Its two leading institutions have made gains in the reputation rankings, reflecting the country鈥檚 commitment to developing world-class universities,鈥 said Phil Baty, the list鈥檚 editor.
鈥淐hina鈥檚 growing stature should lead to further improvements, as a strong reputation helps universities to attract and retain more global talent and investment,鈥 he said.
The top 10 universities are all in the United States and the UK. Harvard retains the first place, while Cambridge moves to second from fourth a year ago. Oxford is third, up two places from last year.
The highest ranking Asian university is the University of Tokyo in 12th place.
The 2015 World Reputation Rankings are based on 9,794 responses from 142 countries. They differ from the annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings in being based on subjective judgment of teaching and research experts.
