5 arrested after probe into waste dumping
FIVE people have been arrested in connection with the illegal dumping of garbage at Taihu Lake in east China’s Jiangsu Province.
Charges include causing environmental damage and dereliction of duty.
On July 1, eight vessels from Shanghai were seized after it was alleged they had dumped garbage on an abandoned embankment at the Taihu Lake Drug Rehabilitation Center, prosecutors said.
The garbage was from Shanghai’s Jiading and Changning districts, mostly construction waste but some domestic refuse too, they said.
Jinlu Construction and Engineering Co in Jiangsu’s Kunshan is alleged to have dumped 23,336 tons of garbage at the same spot since mid June, prosecutors said.
The domestic garbage contained toxic substances, causing serious pollution, but all the waste had now been dealt with, they added.
The five arrested are two legal representatives of Jinlu; a person alleged to have fabricated a landfill project at the center and swindled the representatives out of 250,000 yuan (US$37,489); the center’s deputy director; and the director of the center’s construction department.
In addition, four people from six Shanghai wharfs have been detained for causing environmental damage, while another six people from the wharfs are on bail, prosecutors said.
An investigation into the incident continues.
