5 detained for illegally raising noodle prices
POLICE in a southwest China city have detained five people who allegedly encouraged noodle makers to raise their prices by 25 percent, sparking outrage among citizens, today's People's Daily reported.
All noodle workshops in Luizhou raised their prices from 1.5 yuan (22 US cents) per kilogram to 1.9 yuan on January 21, the city government said.
The government launched an investigation two days after the increase as illegal price manipulation was suspected, and has now ordered makers to reduce prices.
Liuzhou's vice mayor Hu Minglang promised to publish the results of a probe as soon as possible.
