5 die in workshop blast

AN explosion at a workshop in a pharmaceutical factory in Kunming City killed at least five people yesterday.

Eight others were injured in the blast in the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province at around 9:50am, officials said.

Five of the injured are in a critical condition.

The blaze was brought under control by 11:30am.

Police have taken away six people related to the fatal accident, the local news hub, Kunming.cn, reported.

The blast sent a huge plume of smoke and flames dozens of meters high from the third and fourth floor of Kunming Quanxin Biological Pharmacy Co Ltd.

An initial investigation showed there were 13 people in the workshop when the blast happened.

Three people jumped from the third floor to escape the blaze.

The police evacuated students and teachers from nearby Guandu No. 2 Middle School and cordoned off the area.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
