5 firefighters killed in blaze

FIVE firefighters were killed on Friday as they battled a blaze at a warehouse in northeast China, local authorities said yesterday.

The fire broke out about 1:15pm on the third floor of an 11-story mixed-use building in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province.

The bottom three floors of the property are used as a ceramics market with the upper eight being home to apartments.

The five officers were killed when part of the building collapsed. Fourteen of their colleagues were also injured during a 22-hour battle to bring the blaze under control. Three of them are in a critical condition.

The officers killed were aged between 18 and 22, officials said.

About 2,000 residents of the apartments were evacuated, and the local civil affairs department has sent clothes and quilts to keep them warm.

As investigators began piecing together the events of the past two days, the Ministry of Public Security said it had sent experts to Harbin to help handle the situation.

It also urged fire departments across the country to carry out examinations of high-risk buildings.

“Areas with dense populations, and places that are prone to combustion or explosions in particular should be inspected,” said Yang Jianmin, an official with the security ministry’s firefighting department.
