5 get death sentences for fishing boat killings

FIVE crewmen have been sentenced to death for killing 16 shipmates on an oceangoing fishing boat, a court in east China's Shandong Province announced yesterday.

The Intermediate People's Court of Weihai City ruled that Liu Guiduo and 10 other defendants were guilty intentional homicide that left 16 dead and six others missing.

It said that Liu and other crew on the Lurongyu 2682 were unhappy with their wages and plotted to take control of the vessel while it was sailing near Chile in 2011.

The Beijing News said they killed crewmates who might foil their plan or forced them to jump into the ocean.

Citing court documents, the newspaper said the men were due to be paid 45,000 yuan (US$7,200) a year and planned to bargain with management by hijacking the vessel.

Liu and four other ringleaders received death penalties, while six other crew members were given sentences including death sentence with reprieve, life imprisonment and fixed-term imprisonment. They were arrested on August 12, 2011.
