5 held after police track heroin smuggling gang

FIVE suspects were detained and 41 kilograms of heroin seized in the latest crackdown on drug trafficking by police in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

The operation in the city of Ruili in the Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Dehong on March 31 was launched after reports that an overseas drug trafficking ring was planning to ship narcotics to China.

Police detected two suspects from Myanmar as they crossed the border into China on March 31. They followed them to a hotel in Ruili, where they met three Chinese colleagues. All five were arrested.

In the trunk of their SUV, police found 120 blocks of heroin. The two suspects from Myanmar said they had been promised 5,000 yuan (US$725).

Dehong prefecture is close to the opium-growing Golden Triangle. Last year, border police there seized 1.6 tons of narcotics, investigated 668 drug-related crimes and arrested 662 suspects.
