5 held after probe into death of official
Five people are being held by police in connection with the death of an official in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, according to yesterday’s Caijing Magazine.
It quoted sources as saying the suspects included people with connections to a real estate company that had a close relationship with the local government.
Caijing alleged that the company had been the subject of complaints about the illegal acquisition of land meant for public use.
Fan Jiadong, 46, had often traveled to Beijing to complain about violations of the law and Party discipline, including the misuse of public funds by local government officials, according to an earlier Xinhua news agency report.
On April 2, the Qing’an County official was found lying on the ground in Suihua City with multiple injuries. He died on May 1.
Fan is said to have told police he had been assaulted by two masked men with sticks, Xinhua reported.
Police launched an investigation into his death but it is not yet known if the attack was related to his work, Caijing said.
Fan’s job involved listening to complaints about officials made by the public and he would sometimes travel to Beijing to get advice or support from his superiors, the magazine said.
His last visit to Beijing was on February 12 over the 50 million yuan (US$8 million) spent on a building erected on farmland acquired by the local government.
