5 hurt as car rams into resting migrant workers
A WOMAN is being held by police in Zhengzhou City on suspicion of ramming a car three times into migrant workers sitting or sleeping outdoors on Thursday night.
The suspect, surnamed Li, was taken into custody on Saturday, according to local news website Dahe.cn.
Li, 29, said to be a friend of the owner of the car involved, is alleged to have driven recklessly onto open ground about 100 meters from the intersection of Fengqing Road and Guoji Road in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province.
Migrant workers from building sites nearby had been accustomed to spend their nights there before the incident but now fear for their safety, yesterday's Zhengzhou Evening News reported.
A red Mazda 6 was initially witnessed to be driving slowly through the southern entrance to the open ground at about 10pm with both headlights switched off. The driver suddenly turned on the lights and accelerated toward people resting on the ground, the report said.
Several people were hit including Liu Hui, who was run over by the car and suffered chest injuries.
The car then returned via the northern entrance and chased workers in a zigzag fashion for several minutes, witnesses said.
Liu Hui was again hit and passed out.
He is in hospital with five broken ribs, chest injuries and a fracture to his left arm.
The car appeared at the scene for a third time at about 10:30pm but escaped from the scene when dozens of workers intervened.
Five people were left injured after the three incidents, including Liu and another worker who was in a serious condition.
At about 11pm, the car again returned to the scene, but police who had arrived to investigate the earlier incidents gave chase.
