5 hurt as police gun goes off at kindergarten safety talk

A GUN accidentally discharged during a safety demonstration by police officers at a kindergarten in central China yesterday, injuring a child and four adults.

The two officers involved in the incident in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, have been punished with a period of confinement and three of their supervisors suspended, said China’s Ministry of Public Security.

Police in the city’s Zhengdong District had been asked to give a presentation on safety at Haiwen Kindergarten in the lead up to Children’s Day on Sunday, said local police.

But toward the end of the talk, when officers were showing children and parents the equipment they use, a bullet was accidentally discharged from a handgun, police said.

The round was fired into the ground, throwing up pieces of cement that left four adults and a child with scratches to their arms and legs, said police.

The accident happened when a patrolman was showing a gun to curious children, reported traffic news radio program in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province.

A bullet fired while he was checking the gun, with the muzzle pointed toward the ground, added the program.

The injured were taken to hospital for treatment. Police said their injuries were minor.

One parent, whose wife and child were hurt, said the police officer had allowed parents to take pictures of the gun without the officer involved realizing that it was loaded, Henan Business Daiy reported.

Haiwen Kindergarten, the largest privately-run pre-school institution in the city, can accommodate 1,000 children, said the newspaper.

The two officers giving the demonstration have been put in confinement, while a deputy director, a chief of a traffic patrol team and a political tutor of the Zhengdong New Area Police Station have been suspended, said China’s Ministry of Public Security.

The ministry told police to find the cause of the accident and prevent it happening again.
