5 in hospital after gas leak
FIVE firemen are in hospital, one in intensive care, after a toxic gas leak from a chemical plant in east China's Zhejiang Province.
The incident forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 residents late on Friday.
The firemen are being treated in a hospital in Hangzhou, the provincial capital, a city government spokesman said.
At around 7pm on Friday, thick fumes were detected at a warehouse for toxic materials at a chemical plant of the Hangzhou Hexiang Fine Chemical Co Ltd in Xiangfu town.
Residents nearby began to smell a pungent odor, their eyes watered and they complained of sore throats, said the spokesman.
At around 7:19pm, the fire brigade arrived at the scene and started to evacuate residents. They rescued 20 people from the factory area.
Firefighters used powder to stabilize the gas, and sprayed water to dilute it. The situation had been brought under control in yesterday's early hours.
Five firemen developed symptoms of vomiting and dizziness and were taken to hospital.
The spokesman said the toxic material was Thiocarbamide. It emits pungent gas at high temperatures.
Environmental tests and monitoring are under way, and the cause of the accident is under investigation, he said.
