5 killed in village shootout
FIVE people, including two police officers, were shot dead this week in north China’s Hebei Province when a man armed with a hunting rifle went on the rampage, the provincial public security department said on Tuesday.
The alleged killer, who was among the fatalities, was identified as 55-year-old Liu Shuangrui, a resident of he village of Xishibao in Suning County.
The incident began just before midnight on Monday, when Liu began firing at his fellow villagers with a double-barreled hunting rifle, a police statement said.
Two members of the public — Liu Xinyuan, aged about 40, and Liu Guangchun, aged about 70 — were shot dead, while five others were injured, the local Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reported.
When police went on the hunt for Liu, he engaged them in a gun battle, according to a statement by police in the city of Cangzhou, which administers Suning.
Assistant Police Chief Yuan Shuai, 34, and Political Commissar Xue Yongqing, 48, from the Suning Public Security Bureau died in hospital from gunshot wounds inflicted during the fire-fight, while two other officers were hurt, the statement said.
Liu was eventually cornered in his house, which police managed to enter about 5am on Tuesday and found the gunman dead inside, the statement said, adding that the cause of his death is being investigated.
The newspaper claimed that Liu was shot dead by police.
Three of the people injured — two members of the public and a police official — are in a serious condition and have been transferred to a hospital in Beijing, it said.
A statement released by the Fuzuo Town government, which administers the village, claimed Liu had suffered with schizophrenia for many years, the report said.
