5 men get just rewards for rape bid

FIVE men, including two police officers, were sentenced yesterday for the attempted rape of two 16-year-old girls in Hunan Province in September.
The five men drugged the girls with ketamine and attempted to rape them on September 4 in a hotel in Fenghuang County, the Intermediate People's Court in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture said.
The girls, from neighboring Hubei Province, resisted the men's attempts to rape them, the court said.
One of the girls, Qiu Changhong, fled from the room, jumped from a window on the ninth floor of the hotel and died at the scene. The other victim, surnamed Hou, was a friend of Lin Yi, a car mechanic, one of the accused.
Policeman Gong Cheng was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve while assistant policeman Xu Lei was sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to a ruling handed down by the court.
Lin was also sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.
Bus drivers Han Xiaodong was sentenced to life imprisonment and Wang Kai got a 13 year jail term.
The five were also ordered to pay 350,044 yuan (US$52,470) in compensation.
