5 officials sacked over housing lottery racket

FIVE officials were removed from their posts for dereliction of duty and five other people were arrested in Hubei Province for their alleged involvement in a lottery scam for affordable housing, authorities said yesterday.

The incident came to light on June 12 when the winning ticket in a lottery for low-income housing was six consecutive numbers.

A math expert from Huazhong Normal University told Chutian Metropolis Daily that the probability of drawing six consecutive numbers in that lottery was one out of a thousand trillion.

More than 5,000 people had applied for the 124 housing units in Wuhan's Wuchang District.

Police arrested five suspects: Wang Pin, who allegedly masterminded the scheme, Ke Peng, Liu Shengjun, Chen Tiancheng and Huang Zhi, who is suspected of having written a computer program that selected the six numbers.

They allegedly took nearly 1 million yuan (US$150,000) and will likely face criminal charges, an official said.

Officials Zhu Zhiqiang, Leng Shande, Tang Changhan, Jiao Jinming and Wu Xiaoguo were sacked.
