5 students arrested for air gun smuggling
FIVE university students have been arrested over two cases of alleged air pistol and ammunition smuggling, prosecutors in Shenzhen has said.
The students at the Shenzhen Polytechnic and Guangdong Jiangmen Kindergarten Training College were enticed by high sums offered by gun dealers, according to the Nanshan District People’s Procuratorate,
They are said to have known a gun dealer, surnamed Li, online and went to Hong Kong to buy air pistols and ammunition at Li’s request, China News Service reported yesterday.
Under Li’s guidance they dismantled the air pistols, placed the parts in their luggage and brought the guns and ammunition to Shenzhen through the city port, the report said.
The students received 550 yuan (US$88.7) for bringing each air pistol, the report said.
Li and another dealer then sold these weapons online and sent them to buyers nationwide via express delivery, according to the report.
In the two cases, 41 air pistols and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition were involved.
Some university students are said to have encouraged classmates into smuggling. One student is alleged to have sold air guns online and hired other students to buy more from Hong Kong, the report said.
Procurators said there has been a boom in the trade in recent years, with students attracted by the sums on offer.
They are paid 1,200 yuan for smuggling an air rifle, according to the report.
Dealers trade on the Internet, offering air guns under the guise of different goods. Money in the trade is transferred via online platforms.
The gun dealers claim that weapons and ammunition are toys when sending them to express delivery companies.
