5 students drown in whirling river water
FIVE primary school students were drowned in a river after the four of them rushed to save their classmate in an east China city, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The four boys, all sixth graders, went into the deep waters of the Laopi River in Liu'an City, Anhui Province, trying to save the other boy. They were all swept away by a strong current as none of them could swim.
The five victims and four others were playing along the river at noon on Tuesday. Some were playing in shallow water on the shore when they spotted one of their friends screaming for help.
Tai Dong, Zhang Yihu, Wen Peng and Zhang Ke'ao, walked into the river hand in hand, trying to help the other boy, who was not identified.
"They were all drowning and struggling in deep water," said Xiao Shuai, one of the four boys who remained on the bank. Xiao jumped into the river and pushed Zhang Ke'ao out while the others pulled him to the shore. Later they dragged Tai, Zhang Yihu and Wen out of the water.
But Tai, Zhang Yihu, Wen and Zhang Ke'ao couldn't give up on the one who was still in the river and went to his assistance again when they were sucked into the whirlpool.
Their friends couldn't find any trace of the five boys after the river calmed down.
"I always feel they will come back to school again," said their teacher surnamed Shen, who described them as "excellent students."
"They left a handful of footprints on the bank. The rest four boys burst into tears after seeing the bodies of their friends," said a villager who helped search for the bodies.
