5 wounded as fake army SUV tries to flee police check

A man who injured five people when driving an SUV with a fake military plate was detained by police for endangering public security in northern Shanxi Province.

Police in the provincial capital of Taiyuan said Li Jinfeng, 30, bought a second-hand SUV and decorated it as a military vehicle with a fake army plate last December, Shanxi Evening News reported yesterday.

Li allegedly drove the SUV for his iron ore business and violated traffic rules three times. On July 15 he crashed with 12 cars and injured four policemen and a walker when he tried to evade police road check.

Li was caught at home in Taiyuan on July 18. He claimed he mistook the gas pedal for the brake, causing the SUV to accelerate when police were coming his way. Li also said he turned his SUV into a mock army vehicle "for fun."
