50 dead, 40 missing as floods and landslides destroy homes
RAIN and floods battering southern regions of China since Thursday night have killed at least 50 people and left 40 others missing in the provinces of Hubei, Hunan Jiangxi and Guizhou.
Torrential rain triggered floods and landslides that toppled homes and destroyed river embankments in Hubei's Xianning City, killing 25 people and leaving 12 missing, a spokesman for the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters said yesterday.
Meanwhile, nearly 100,000 people were stranded by floods in three of Xianning's counties - Tongcheng, Chibi and Chongyang.
Xianning was hit by rain and floods from 8pm on Thursday to 5am yesterday.
In Tongcheng County, about 300 millimeters of rain fell in just four hours, a record.
The entire county was virtually submerged, with more than 125,000 people forced to flee their homes.
Flooding was more than 2 meters deep in Tongcheng's low-lying areas. Traffic in the county seat was paralyzed, with floods between 60 and 90 centimeters deep.
Electricity and phone services in Tongcheng have been cut off by the floods and more than 300 people living downstream from one of the county's reservoirs had to be evacuated after the reservoir was overwhelmed.
In Chibi, 110,000 people were taken to safety after homes were toppled and river embankments destroyed.
Floods also killed two people in the nearby city of Huanggang, said a spokesman for Hubei's civil affairs department.
In neighboring Hunan Province, 19 people died and another 28 are still missing after rain-triggered landslides during the early hours yesterday in the cities of Linxiang and Yueyang.
Rain-triggered floods also wreaked havoc in eastern China's Jiangxi Province. By noon, rescuers had rescued 1,200 trapped residents in Xiushui County, where 29,500 have been evacuated to escape rising waters. Three people, including a child, died after their homes were crushed by landslides in the county.
The new round of heavy rain also killed three people in Guizhou Province, which reported 50 people dead of missing in rain-triggered floods early this week.
The downpours from 1am to 6am yesterday made roads impassable in 18 townships and disrupted power supplies in five others.
The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Disaster Relief Committee yesterday sent two work teams to Hubei and Hunan to assist with disaster relief operations.
