50 injured, 8 seriously, when quake hit Yunnan
Fifty people were injured when a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China鈥檚 Yunnan Province on Sunday, local officials said yesterday.
Eight were seriously hurt while the others suffered only slight injuries, officials said.
By yesterday roads, power and water supply as well as communication had been restored in affected areas, they said.
The tremor that struck Cangyuan County had affected more than 81,000 residents in the counties of Cangyuan and Gengma in Lincang City.
In addition, more than 220 homes were destroyed and over 15,800 seriously damaged in the two counties.
The Lincang municipal government has allocated 4 million yuan (US$650,407) to supply relief materials.
Cangyuan is a sparsely populated county that borders Myanmar. Houses in its rural areas were not built to sustain earthquakes.
A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Yunnan鈥檚 Ludian County on August 3 last year, claiming more than 600 lives and destroying over 80,000 homes.
