55 dead, 14 missing as storms hit south China

FIFTY-FIVE people have died and 14 others are reported missing in the latest round of rain and hailstorms that have swept south China.

Hardest-hit Guangdong Province reported 36 deaths and 10 people missing, the National Committee for Disaster Reduction said.

Guangdong's weather service said some areas received more than 9 centimeters of rain by 5pm yesterday.

It is forecasting that there will be more rain over the next few days and is warning of mudslides.

Last night, the committee and the Ministry of Civil Affairs initiated an emergency response for storms and flooding in Hunan Province that had already affected 1.59 million people and claimed three lives.

The committee dispatched 3,000 tents to affected areas.

Civil affairs and disaster reduction authorities in Hunan have also sent relief materials including tents, blankets and bottled water to the areas that were hit.

Nine provinces in south China - Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi and Sichuan - and the city of Chongqing have been affected by the fresh round of storms and flooding that began on Tuesday.
