55 fake drug dealers indicted in Beijing court
FIFTY-FIVE people were prosecuted in Beijing for selling fake drugs worth more than 39 million yuan (US$6.19 million) between October 2009 and November 2010.
Twenty-one of them have received prison sentences for mixing flour and sawdust with a small amount of medicine to make fake diabetes drugs, and 34 others are still waiting for their trial, said prosecutors of Shijingshan District.
The criminal ring had 26 underground workshops in Beijing and published ads to deliver the medicine to the homes of middle-aged and elderly patients, the prosecutors said.
Forty-seven gang members were not well educated. They sold fake drugs for 300 to 1,700 yuan per box but the actual cost was less than one yuan, the Beijing News cited the prosecutors as saying.
The ring was busted in July 2010 and authorities seized a large amount of raw materials and equipment from their workshops, the report said.
