56% of employees want 2nd child, survey finds

More than half of employees said they want to have a second child but are concerned about the economic burden, according to a survey.

Of the 1,809 respondents in the survey by online recruitment firm 51job.com, 56 percent said they want a second child while 24 percent said they don’t. Among female respondents, 63 percent said they want a second child.

More than half of the respondents said the cost of raising another child is their biggest concern, followed by worries there is no one to take care of the baby while they are at work.

“Considering the cost of food and a mortgage, families making between 10,000 yuan and 30,000 yuan a month would face financial pressure if they have a second child,” said Feng Lijuan, chief HR expert of 51job.

The website’s survey of 38 human resource managers found that 80 percent said the second child policy has not yet had an impact on their companies.

China this year loosened its single child policy to allow couples to have a second if either parent is an only child.
