57 people face charges over 94 million yuan embezzlement

FIFTY-SEVEN people involved in the embezzlement of 94 million yuan of public funds are facing criminal charges and administrative punishment in Poyang County, Jiangxi Province, Xinhua reported today.

Twelve of them, including the former director of the Poyang Finance Bureau, Ouyang Changqing, and the former president of the Poyang Rural Credit Union, Cao Shaozhou, will be indicted in court. Another offender, Li Huabo, who was the former director of the economic and construction division of the Poyang Finance Bureau, has fled the country, Xinhua said.

According to Jiangxi police, Li and other offenders forged an official seal and invoices in 2006 to obtain the funds and put the money in the Poyang Rural Credit Union in the bank account of a construction company registered by Li. In February Li went abroad and the 94 million yuan cash in the account disappeared.

Investigation since February 11 has uncovered more illegal practices by the offenders in Poyang County which is listed as a poverty-stricken county in China.
