6 arrested for trafficking Bengal tiger

Police arrested six suspects for trafficking an endangered Bengal tiger on Wednesday in Sanmenxia City, Henan Province.

Police received a tip that a young tiger was transported from Jiaozuo City to Sanmenxia when interrogating another suspect on Tuesday. They soon stopped six suspects near a highway on-ramp.

However, the tiger was not in the vehicle. A suspect surnamed Li confessed the tiger was at his home.

The six suspects paid 250,000 yuan (US$40,301) for the Bengal tiger online and planned to earn a profit by reselling it.

The tiger is in good health and has been transported to forestry authorities in Sanxiamen, said Qu Linghe, an official.

Bengal tigers are on China’s list of First Class protected animals. It has been classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature since 2010.

The police are still investigating the case.
