6 dead, 1 injured in gas blast

SIX workers died from carbon monoxide poisoning and another was seriously injured in a factory accident in north China's Hebei Province, a local government official said yesterday.

The accident occurred at 9:30pm on Friday when two workers were pumping gas into a furnace at Shuanglong Metal Products Co Ltd in Nangong City, the official said.

The gas leaked from the pipeline's valve, poisoning the two workers who didn't carry respirators or alarms as required, he said.

Five workers who came to their rescue were also poisoned and all those affected were rushed to a local hospital where the six subsequently died. The injured worker is out of danger, a doctor said.

In a separate incident, the death toll in a traffic collision that triggered an explosion on an expressway in east China's Jiangxi Province early yesterday has risen to four.

The accident took place about 4am on the expressway near Nankang City when a truck loaded with fireworks collided with another truck carrying butter, said a provincial traffic police spokesman.
