6 detained in killing of 5 bears in Changbai Mountains

SIX suspects who used land mines to kill five bears in the Changbai Mountains in China's northeast province of Jilin have been detained, today's Beijing Times reported.

Police also seized eight bear paws and six gallbladders, a shotgun, 20 bullets and two homemade bombs from them.

Hu Donglin, a wildlife activist and writer, posted online that five bears, including moon bears, were killed early this year. The exposure made a stir on the Internet and prompted police to investigate.

Wang Yan, director of Changbaishan Public Security Bureau, told the Beijing Times that the bears were not killed by poison as Hu thought, but by explosion. The suspects made mines about the size of a duck egg and poached the bears in April and May.

Police investigation is still ongoing and Wang said they have stepped up efforts to fight poachers.

Local authorities said they plan to increase investment in wildlife protection and install a remote monitoring system.
