6 held after public funds stolen from poor county
POLICE have detained six officials and are hunting for two others believed to be overseas for allegedly stealing 94 million yuan (US$14.3 million) in public funds from a poverty-stricken county in east China, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.
Jiangxi Province police said they had traced about 54.66 million yuan of the money, which was to be allocated for local agricultural infrastructure, but instead was secretly transferred to officials' bank accounts over the past five years.
Police have also put one suspect under control for investigation.
The suspect is said to have collaborated with Jiangxi government officials to transfer the money to other provinces.
Two major suspects, the director of the economy and construction unit of Poyang County's Finance Bureau Li Huabo and his wife, are thought to be in Canada.
Li allegedly faked a public seal and bogus invoices in 2006 to obtain the money and put it in the bank account of a local construction company registered by Li in Poyang Rural Credit Union.
Police said bank accounts involved had been frozen and 13.8 million yuan of cash and property recovered so far.
