6 held over bogus wine

POLICE in Hebei Province have detained six suspects for allegedly making bogus wine, after media exposed wineries there were producing substandard and falsely labeled wine to places across the country.

Police in Changli County said they have frozen the wineries' financial assets worth of 2.84 million yuan (US$429,900) in 16 bank accounts and seized 5,114 cases of falsely labeled wine, reported the Beijing Morning Post yesterday.

Police didn't name the suspects or the company, adding that the investigation was on-going, the newspaper said.

The detentions came after a raid on December 24, ordered by the province's Governor Chen Quanguo. It followed a report by China Central -Television which revealed that some wine contained just 20 percent fermented grape juice and the rest was sugar water mixed with chemicals, including coloring agents and flavorings.

Huang Weidong, a leading industry expert, said the additives could cause health problems ranging from heart disease to cancer. Under Chinese law, wine should be made from 100 percent fermented grape juice.

Some 30 wineries were shut down as of December 24. Changli County has nearly 100 wineries and is a distribution center for wine products.

It produces a third of China's domestic grape wine and gained fame as China's Bordeaux, but now faces damage to its reputation after CCTV revealed several plants were producing substandard wine.
