6 injured when stage collapses

FOUR media reporters and two members of the audience attending the production launch of a new movie in Yu County in Shanxi Province's Yangquan City were injured when a stage collapsed yesterday afternoon, the CPC Yangquan Committee said.

A seriously injured victim was transferred to a Beijing hospital while the others remained in a stable condition at a local hospital, according to the latest report from Ifeng.com.

The media and fans were present for the start of shooting of renowned director Chen Kaige's film "Zhao's Orphan."

The government statement said some enthusiastic members of the audience rushed onto the stage but the wooden floor in the media section collapsed under their weight.

The stage was designed to accommodate about 200 reporters and cameramen.

The six injured were rushed to hospital and the organizer later apologized to them, promising to compensate for equipment damages, according to the statement.

More than 200 media from around the country yesterday sent crews to Cang Mountain in Yu County - where the ancient legend "Zhao's Orphan" is believed to originate - to cover the start of Chen's movie.

The event attracted more than 1,000 local residents and was attended by well-known actors Ge You, Zhang Fengyi and Wang Xueqi and actresses Fan Bingbing and Hai Qing.

When Chen was delivering an speech at about 1:50pm, the media section collapsed as local residents swarmed onto the 1-meter-high stage to get closer to the cast, according to a witness.

Director Chen, his wife and the film's producer Chen Hong, and leading cast visited the hospital to offer condolences to the injured.

Chen Hong expressed regret over the accident during a hospital news conference and claimed full responsibilty for medical treatment and other damages.

Huang Bin, the film's publicist, blamed poorly organized security hired to maintain order. "Zhao's Orphan" was scheduled to start shooting on Monday.

Chen's "Farewell My Concubine" won the Cannes Palme d'Or award in 1993.
