6 jailed for killing woman in demolition

SIX men who led a forced demolition which resulted in a woman's death in Changchun, northeast China's Jilin Province, were yesterday sentenced to up to five years behind bars for manslaughter.

Wang Haibin, owner of the demolition company, asked Yang Zhe, project manager of Kexin Real Estate Development Co, for approval to forcibly demolish several old houses.

Ma Ning, the legal representative of Kexin, authorized the move, according to the Liaoyuan City Intermediate People's Court.

On March 26, 2011, Wang and Yang arrived at the site and directed Zhang Jihu, Zhang Jiming and Zhang Zhonghua to forcibly knock down the houses, it added.

About a hundred workers and 18 excavators leveled the 14 houses while a woman, Liu Shuxiang, 48, was buried alive under debris and died later.

Wang received a five-year sentence; Zhang Jihu got four years; Zhang Jiming, Zhang Zhonghua, Yang and Ma were given three years each.
